We want you to be successful in caring for the coat of your new puppy, through puppyhood into adulthood. Due to the nature of the "non shedding" dog they require frequent brushing, making sure to get down to skin, mats can be sneaky if you are not checking with a metal comb.
Do you want to know a secret? ALL DOGS SHED, there, I said it.
Does this mean that they are not hypoallergenic? No. Poodles shed too, but, like them, the hair tends to stay in the coat, thus needing to be brushed out to prevent matting. This "Shedding" though is drastically reduced and their hair is different than the typical dog coat.
We don't find hair floating around... well that is not entirely true, we have 4 girls in this house and find our long human hairs quite often!
Being hypoallergenic simply means there is a lesser chance of them causing an allergy flare. There are different aspects of a dog that one may be allergic to (Saliva being one that is not affected by type of coat). Due to the varying types of allergies when it comes to dogs we cannot guarantee that they won't cause a reaction, just to simply say that a reaction is typically less likely.
Depending on the allergy, frequent bathing may also be found to be helpful to lessen possible reaction. If you make sure to use a good conditioner every time, you can absolutely give baths every couple of weeks routinely.
I will send home a list of what I use on the parent dogs, you do not have to buy these specific tools, but they will be what I have experience with. The puppy coat is generally much less maintenance but do not let that cause you to slide! Your puppy will come to you with grooming desensitization started but you need to be sure to continue it in order to have a compliant dog at the groomers. Groomers love to see happy friendly dogs who will stand there like good boys and girls and it is our job as owners to make sure that our dogs are those dogs, that our dogs are not overly stressed out being groomed.
Depending on the length of the coat you like to maintain, expect to have your dog groomed every 4-8 weeks. Stretching to 8 weeks may be ok if you are ok with a shorter cut as they are easier to maintain.
You may choose to groom yourself (I did!) and whether you do or not, I would consider joining the "DIY Doodle grooming" group on Facebook, there you will find so much advice and knowledge on things even as "simple" as brushing. Does this seem like a lot of work? Sometimes it feels like it, but to us it is always worth it, we love these guys and also love not walking around with fur coats on our clothes and constantly cleaning hair off the furniture. Plus, how cute are the little teddy bears?!
